The
rapid growth of PRC satellite, terrestrial, cable channels and
the internet has created a massive domestic demand for media content
that cannot be satisfied by the state-owned broadcast industry.
At the same time, increased global interest in China continues
to fuel demand for China product with international production
standards.
Given the recent partial lifting of restrictions on international
investment in the Chinese production sector, local independent and
state-owned operations will need to adopt international management.
With over 10 years experience co-producing and distributing non-drama
TV content in China, OMI is taking advance investment positions
in offshore and onshore production and distribution ventures that
supply original and versioned products for Chinese and international
markets.

In May 2002, Odyssey
Media Consulting and Beijing TV formalized a ten year co-production
relationship (that includes award winning documentary Wandering
Acrobats of Wuqiao) with the establishment of
Chinalive Productions,
a new unit to service increasing international requirements for
high quality production services.
Under this agreement, senior Odyssey directors and producers work
with select Beijing TV personnel to deliver news, magazine, feature
and documentary production and post-production commissions for
international producer and broadcaster clients using the Chinalive
brand name.
In June 2002, Odyssey Media Consulting
reached further agreement with the China City TV Stations Research
Committee to extend Chinalive Productions' service remit nationwide
through local broadcasters in 217 cities, the first national agreement
of its kind.
Chinalive has completed work for several international production
companies and broadcasters in association with CCTV, Beijing TV
and Guangdong TV. Clients have included MLB, SNTV, Sporting Frontiers
and Unisys. Chinalive Productions has several productions in development
with European, US and Chinese production partners, including major
historical and music documentaries.
Given on-going restrictions on direct foreign investment into media
sectors, Chinalive Productions is developing its domestic business
through extension of Odyssey commercial agreements in place since
1993. With relaxation of restrictions on foreign investment in production
ventures, the partners in Chinalive are well positioned to exploit the
value of their experienced production teams and well developed customer
base.
